What can you do if you break a bone? How can you help your body heal most efficiently? Last week, I broke my left shoulder in a bike accident and researched and dug deep to get a good list to follow. If you’re following my osteoporosis diet already, most of these will already be covered.

Check out these top 10 ways to speed the healing of a fracture!

1) No drinking.
It is best to abstain from alcohol while healing a broken bone. To heal properly, bone cells must first form a ‘matrix,’ which later hardens or ossifies into bone. Alcohol consumption changes the makeup of this matrix by hindering the formation of osteoblasts and decreasing their ability to respond to signals that normally trigger bone formation after a fracture.

2) No smoking.
Patients who smoke, have a much longer average time to healing, and a much higher risk of developing a nonunion (non-healing of the bone). Smoking alters the blood flow to bone, and it is that blood flow that delivers the necessary nutrients and cells to allow the bone to heal.

3) Eliminate caffeine.
Coffee, colas, and other caffeinated drinks increase the rate of calcium loss through the urine, and you need that calcium for bone building!

4) Eat a balanced diet that includes the recommended amount of calcium.
For a quick listing of great foods for encouraging bone health, check out my article, “Top 10 Bone-Building Foods.” For a more extensive listing, see the “Foundations” category of this website.

5) Follow doctor’s orders concerning your treatment plan.
*If you are told to use crutches, use them.
*If you are told to rest the injury, rest it.
*If you are told to move the joint to restore full mobility, move it!
*If physical therapy is scheduled, follow through with it!

6) Don’t overdo!
You may feel better on some days than others, but you still need to pace yourself to conserve the energy resources you body needs to use for healing.

7) Stay happy!
Read engaging books, watch comedies and movies with happy endings, call or e-mail an encouraging friend, pet your dog or cat. Simple joys can create happy moments while healing.

8) Take prescribed pain medications when you need them.
There’s nothing heroic about suffering when you don’t need to! On the other hand, foregoing pain meds can sometimes help you focus on the injury so that you can move carefully and protect the bone and affected muscles and joints. You are the best judge of what your body needs. If you need relief from the pain for a time, don’t hesitate to give yourself a break!

9) Do something for someone else.
Look around an you will find others with needs. Doing something to help them will take you out of yourself and your situation, and it will lighten their load–and yours! There may be something you can do physically, even with your current limitations. But even if you can’t move, you can listen to others. You can pray for them. Your time of healing can become a time of healing for them, too!

10) Bless others by opening your heart to receive their help.
If you refuse to allow friends and family to help you for fear of being a “burden” or for fear of losing your independence, you are robbing them of the blessing and happiness they would experience by giving of themselves to you. Why not let them, instead, be a source of joy and comfort to you? Love makes the world go ’round, they say. Giving and receiving love in service to one another transforms our lives into a fulfilling, heart-warming adventure!

Anu, start taking megadoses of vitamin C. GNC has absorbic acid, very inexpensive and in 1 gram tablets. Take as much as tolerable until your stool begins to soften then back down 1 gram and take that amount for awhile until you can try increasing the dose again. It WILL heal just needs time. C helps reduce painful inflammation also. God bless and hope you try it. Trust God not doctors. Google questions for finding a solution.

my son got feactured in his left hand near fingers .so during this period what food shall i give him to recover fast.

    • Robin says:

Give him the amount of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, vitamin D3 and vitamin C recommended daily allowance for his age group. Dairy products, canned salmon with the bones, broccoli, dark, leafy greens, soy products and almonds all contain calcium. Citrus fruits, strawberries, cranberries and melons all have vitamin C. Mushrooms grown in sunlight have vitamin D. The package usually says if they do. I buy baby bella mushrooms at the local store. If you can’t get him to eat enough calcium, try nutrition shakes such as Carnation Instant Breakfast (I have seen hospitals use this specific brand) or some vanilla cashew milk which is creamier and has as much calcium as skim milk. Rumor has it that lysine also speeds up healing. Green beans have lysine and so do some other legumes.

  30. A friend broke his leg three weeks ago and since then the signs of recovery are very rare. Well due to what I’ve read on your article tells why his pains are still fresh instead of a complete fitness. In relation to that, my friend’s not stopped his drinking habit, which to gives a signal to synpathizers that he’s getting better by the day, So what advice do you have for him as he’s the bridewinner of his family and currently just at home without getting even into his bedroom from the sitting-room. Thanks dear!!! Aruna.

  33. Kathy says:

Hi, Nhat. A broken leg is definitely no fun! If you’re like me, you’re feeling helpless and hopeless. But, the good news is that your bones want to heal, and they will do everything they can to make that happen. Even though life seems out of control right now, you DO have control over what you eat and drink, and the fact that you’re reading this article must mean that you have an interest in helping your bones along. I will keep you prayer for an uplifted spirit, despite the pain and the aggravation. If you are up to it, you might try keeping a journal every day while you heal. It makes for very interesting reading once you’re well.

    God bless you,
    Kathy

I broke my Talus (in my foot, attaches my heal to my ankle) a week ago. I’ve been doing some research on healing it faster then normal. Any advice on how to boast my alkaline? Luckily I don’t smoke or brink so no worry there. Also the phone I broke it is VERY susceptible to lose blood flow and the bone will die. Any advice on that issue?

    • Kathy says:

Hi, Darian. I’m so sorry to hear about your broken foot, but it sounds like you’re on the fast track to healing. The quick answer to upping your alkalinity is to eat more fruits and vegetables, but this website chock of delicious details that make the switch a joy! Please check the recipes, as well as the Foundation articles that tell more about the alkaline diet. God bless you as you heal.

  36. Kathy says:

Hello, Dedra and Naveen. My goodness, you both have been through such tremendous ordeals! Dedra, as I am not a doctor, I don’t know what to advise you about removing the plate. I have the feeling, though, that since your ankles are naturally very thin, you may have to keep the plate to ensure future stability. Naveen, it’s so hard getting around on crutches, but you have made amazing progress! God bless you both. I will be praying for you.
    Kathy

  37. Kathy says:

Hi, Jemil. Yes, I included caffeine on the list because the experts said its high acidity tends to leach calcium from the bones to neutralize the acid. I gave up drinking coffee while my shoulder fractures were healing, but nowadays I’m back to drinking a cup of coffee in the morning, just like you. 🙂

I pray that your break is healing well, and that you’ll be back on road soon.

    God bless you,
    Kathy

  38. Jemil says:

    Hi there

I broke my tibia in a motorbike accident a month ago and have been trying to find a list of helpful do’s and don’ts so this list is great, thanks alot.

One thing I notice is that you have caffeine on your list. I have been trying to find studies or anything tangible on caffeine and its effects on bone healing but I’ve not been able to find any. I wondered if you had found any when you were creating this list?

I only drink 1 coffee a day, but I’m starting to wonder if that is going to be a problem

    All the best

    J

  39. Naveen says:

    Thank you for the info…..

Had a motor bike accident, messed up my left foot very bad …..

after 6 months and 10 surgeries (microvascular and ortho combined) later, starting to walk again with crutches 🙂

  40. Dedra says:

    Hello,
I broke my ankle in a car accident a couple of weeks ago. The doctor said on a scale of 1-10 it was an 8, only because it was not compound. I am so very grateful that I am not in pain and a broken ankle is my only souvenir from that trip! However, it has been a pain in the neck because I am on crutches, can’t drive, and on the couch 80% of the time. The doctor said because my ankles are naturally very thin, the plate will be visible when the swelling goes down (not the actual plate, but you get what I’m saying). Would you suggest getting it removed in the future? Thank you.

    • Kathy says:

Sarah, there is much you can do to make an enjoyable summer for your whole family! Help your mother to feel loved, to have fun, and to hope for better days ahead. Your family will benefit in amazing ways from each act of love and support you show to her. Find some enjoyable activities that she can participate in with you, like dominoes, scrabble, and crafts. God bless you as your help you mom to heal.

  42. frances says:

    hello,
i broke my arm 18 days ago. was reset in er on a friday and a cast put on the following monday. i have no insurance, but was told i should get another x-ray in a week or two. any suggestions on where i should go with no insurance. i lost my insurance when company forced to liquidate (former hostess brands / woder bread worker)

    • Kathy says:

Hello, Frances. I wish you lived here in DeLand. The Churches here in DeLand have set up a free clinic of doctors and nurses to treat patients who don’t have health care insurance and can’t afford uninsured medical care. Even so, you may be able to call around for reasonable prices on x-rays. Some imaging centers charge a reduced fee, if the patient pays cash for the x-ray. I will keep you in my prayers that you will find the right care at the right price and that your arm will heal quickly and completely.

      God bless you,
      Kathy

  43. Kathy says:

Hello, Susanne. How is your healing progressing? Did you end up having surgery? Have you started physical therapy yet? I’ll be praying for your continued healing.

    Blessings to you and yours,
    Kathy

  44. Susanne says:

Hello all.Broke my right arm 3 weeks ago, was on vacation and horse back riding and the saddle slipped. They don’t cast upper humerus breaks. It’s been tough, they wont know about surgery for yet another 3 weeks! I sit at a desk soIm able to work by tiring and frustrating working left handed. I wish rapid healing to all!!!

  45. Kathy says:

Hi, Arlene. I’ve heard good things about the use of magnetic fields and mild vibrations to strengthen bones, but I have no direct experience of these techniques. As for the possible benefits of alcohol, I’m attaching an article that explains that alcohol slows the remodeling process of bone, which is supposedly beneficial for older persons, but not younger persons. I’m not buying it that alcohol is beneficial for either group. http://health.usnews.com/healt.....one-health

  46. Kathy says:

Veronica, looks like both you and your family are making terrific progress! Won’t be long until you’re out on the dance floor again. 🙂

    Blessings to you and yours,
    Kathy

  47. Arlene says:

A therapy being used in progressive hospitals is putting the broken limb in a magnetic field. Also have heard a lot about mild vibration to strengthen bones. Also, there has been a lot of research showing that a glass of wine or alcohol a day helps prevent osteoporosis by preventing bone loss. Wouldn’t that also help heal a break?

  48. Veronica says:

Hello again! It’s been 4 weeks since my foot got broken! My kids are doing just fine, they have been a wonderful help, the doctors took away my cast and now I’m wearing a boot, I can not step yet but I think everything is going to heal ! I just miss dancing so much! I want to get back again!

  49. Kathy says:

Eunice, the only way I know to determine whether your ankle is broken or not would be an X-ray. I would be surprised if it’s broken, since you were able to walk, run, and jump on it, but it would seem better to know for sure. Perhaps your ankle simply needs a chiropractic adjustment! In the past, when I’ve jammed my ankle, a quick adjustment left it feeling good as new in seconds.

    God bless you,
    Kathy

  50. Eunice says:

So I’m not exactly sure if my ankle is broken, but before it started to hurt, I had no problem walking on it, running on it, and even jumping on it. But when I got home, it started to hurt more. Is there any way to know for sure whether or not, it is broken? And to top it all off, I have a rally this Saturday which I NEED to attend.

  51. Kathy says:

Richard, I’m sorry for the late reply. I did not see you comments on my website’s dashboard until now. I do not know what the snapping sounds are, but you might ask your doctor if the tendons or ligaments are tight and need stretching. Also, my husband takes Stem Enhance capsules, as you do, and he thinks they aid him in healing and stamina. I will keep you in prayer for a complete recovery.

    God bless you,
    Kathy

  52. Kathy says:

Samuel, I wish I knew what types of medications would be useful, but I don’t. Does anyone else know?

Adia, I broke my arm at the elbow years ago when I was roller skating. How did you break yours? Did you break the elbow of the arm you write with, or did you break the other elbow?

Veronica, I understand your sense of panic. Years ago when I broke my right elbow and could not write or use my right arm in any way, I was raising 5 children, working full-time as a teacher, and completing my last semester of graduate school! How was I going to survive while my arm was out of commission, I wondered? Truthfully, it was very, very difficult, but my kids stepped up to the task! My oldest, who was 12 years old and in 7th grade, came with me to college and took notes while the professor spoke. My father helped me write out my lesson plans. Students at school wrote on the board and overhead for me. I would much rather have done all these things myself, as I could have done them more quickly and efficiently, BUT I now believe that the experience was good for everyone involved. Your family will grow in ways you can’t imagine now. Eventually, when you look back and wonder how you survived it all, you will see how God brought good out it and that you and your family are stronger than ever! I will keep you and your family in prayer. Let me know how you’re doing as you heal, okay? I want to hear your story, and I’m sure others will benefit, too, from what you will share.

    God bless you all,
    Kathy

  53. Veronica says:

Hi everyone! I’m a 36 years old mother of 7 wonderful kids, las week I fractured a feet bone while doing my ballet class, my mom came to helpme for a few days but I just started to panic because my husband is on a bussines trip and I’m going to be just by myself with all this work for at least 6 weeks, i already visualize my healing sooner than expected and I have started to thank God and the universe for the lesson! Today I learned how to drive with the left feet instead the right and I’m trying my best to do everything I can hapily intead of looking what I can’t do I’m lokking what I CAN Do but to be sincere I’m very scared about how to be a good mom and keep going without any help, I’m almost vegan I’m eating tons of greens but I don’t know if I’m going to need to include dairyproducts in order to heal faster.

  54. adia says:

hi Kathy, I broke my tibia completely candidates fractured the femur too on 12 September. I had a surgery on the 13th,the doctor did put some stainless metals in it for Alignment. in about a week now I have being hearing snap sounds from my broken leg.what should I do.
    thanks.

  58. Kathy says:

Caleb, Ella, Cynthia, and Geo, thank you for sharing your stories and encouragement with all of us! I am praying for all of you for a complete recovery and for healing in all areas of your life.

Umair, the only way I know to heal a bone quickly is to feed your body the nutrients it needs to rebuild bone. It also help to calm down, relax, meditate, and/or pray. Stressing keeps cortisol levels high from the “fight-or-flight” biochemical reaction of the body. Even though this accident is an awful occurrence, God can still bring good out of it. When you pray or meditate in the quiet, you will begin to see the blessing that is coming to you along with the pain. I will pray that your family will support you as you heal.

Sree Hari, you do not need my permission to smoke one cigarette a day. You need only ask your own body what it wants, and then listen for the reply. Perhaps one cigarette a day will help you relax, and thereby help keep your cortisol level more even so that your bones can heal more easily. On the other hand, one cigarette per day might rob your body of some of the oxygen it needs to help the body heal. Your body will know what it needs. Ask it, and listen honestly for the answer.

God bless you all as you heal,
    Kathy

  59. sree hari says:

my left hand index finger was broken can i smoke 1 cigarete a day.please tell wat will hapen if i take one cigarete a day

  60. Umair says:

hi all !! i need your help guys,as i broke my both tibia and fabula from miidle on sep 13, it was a closed fracture.what should i do to make my leg heal fast..the feeling of burden on family occupies me i need to do something fast as this thing is killing me from inside
ty all ,waiting for ur help !!

  61. Geo says:

It is now…what, 3 months after I posted here about my fracture on June 23? Thank God, everything has turned out well. I spent 6 weeks in a cast. It was hellishly itchy and uncomfortable. But God carried me through it. X-rays have shown full union. A month later I returned to work. I still use a cane and walk with a slight limp but that is getting less and less. In fact, it has gotten to the point where I sometimes forget the cane when leaving my apartment!

I lost a lot of weight: 10 lbs, and dropped a full trouser size in the 6 weeks I was off my feet. I was totally dependent on my mother for meals, and she cooks healthy. Those eating habits have remained with me. Everybody says I look great, and I do feel much better.

The Bible says everything works out for the benefit of those who love God. My benefits are:

    1. A rekindled relationship with Him.
    2. A healthier body.

My broken ankle story has ended happily. To those going through this, I say: hold on to God Almighty and follow the instructions of your doctors and therapists. It’s a hard experience, I KNOW it is! But just hold on, and you’ll come out of it, a stronger, better person.

  62. Cynthia says:

The bone near my ankle on my right foot was cracked when I slipped on the stairs at work. I am in cast now..huhuhu, and the doctor said that it will take 12 weeks before it will be removed. I’m on leave now and I miss going to school and also I miss joining in the choir at church.. Anyway, Thank u for those tips. But is it okay taking active calcium supplements and milk everyday? There is still aches when I moved my right foot. I pray that I will be healed soon. More blessing..

I knocked my self out and got a conncussion and broke the two bones in my arm right before the wrist joint, and my collar bone. Three days after the accident I got surgery on my wrist with a plate and six screws. 19 days after the accident which is yesterday I got surgery again but now on my collar bone.(because it kept moving). I got a plate but I’m not to sure how many screws yet. Thanks for all the other comments and article. I am glad I made it back home and I will try to have a speedy recovery.

K, broke my 5th metatarsal 2 days ago. now wearing a semi cast. Clearly now smoking and no alcohol is already in practice within the fast healing process. Yet I have a few sports obligations in 10 days time, that require me stand ank kneeling, no running no walkin ( AIKIDO GRADING ), I really need to heal at the speed of light. aside of the vitamin/protein diet… anything else perhaps unnatural process to implement ? thanks

K.R., I have never heard of such a law, but such unprofessional behavior should be reported to the hospital administrator. Would you feel confident in reporting the surgeons’ behavior? Also, is your knee healing better after the operation?

No one inside the operation theatre should be permitted to carry cell phones with them. There is no matter that is more important and serious than the ongoing surgery. Land line telephone outside the operation theatre attended by a qualified person could convey message to doctors in side, if it is so much urgent to interupt. Medical council should punish concerned who Contravene these procedure.

  73. K.R.Chandrasekaran says:

During last week of October,2011, I got my knee cap(petella) fractured in to two, and that day itself admitted in a leading hospital in Bangalore.Next day a senior most surgeon operated and told me operation was successful.I was discharged and went home, had physio therapy and was able to stand, walk gradually. But when I came to chennai, and took X.Ray, the doctor said that the implant had failed and perhaps I might need revision surgery. In the operation theatre, the Assistant surgeon and other helping senior surgeon, were chit chatting, talking in cell phone, for minutes to gether, thereby even semiconcious patient like me could not be peaceful. Is there any law preventing mendical professionals using Cell phones, in operation theatre and in consulting rooms. This irks patients very much.

I broke my arm about 5 days ago, i didnt realize at first that i had broken it, so i waited for a day thinking the pain would subside, but when it didnt, i went to the doctor and i was given a cast which i have been with for few days now, i actually smoked 4 sticks of cigarettes so far since i got the cast and i dont intend to smoke any again after what i have read here, i hope that will not affect my healing. And sometimes, i feel something like clicks in the arm, is it part of the healing process? Also, please advice on thing to eat to aid speedy healing. Thanks.

    • Kathy says:

Hi, John. It sure sounds like you are on the right track for healing. Best foods I know of for speeding things up are fresh fruits, vegetables, seeds (flaxseeds, sunflower seeds), raw nuts (almonds, walnuts, pecans, etc.), and some protein (grass-fed meat, fish, protein powder, Greek yogurt, etc.). You can’t go wrong with well-rounded meals of foods high in nutrients!

May God bless you with a quick, complete recovery,
      Kathy

  75. Kathy says:

Melody, I’ve never heard of that protocol for healing broken bones, but it sure sounds like it did the trick in record time. Congratulations!

Jonathan, I’m glad you have found a hidden blessing in your injury. Because I am not a doctor, I cannot say whether it is okay for you to stay on an all-juice diet. As long as you give your body the all nutrients it need to build bones, it probably doesn’t matter whether you consume them in solid or liquid form.

Tim, I’ll bet your sacrifice of beer and coffee will help a lot. The main idea is keep your blood pH at an alkaline level of 7.0 or higher, so that the minerals you ingest can be used to build bone, rather than to neutralize acidity in the blood.

All of you, I am remembering you in my prayers each night, asking God to help you heal quickly and completely, according to His most holy will, which is love and mercy itself.

    God bless you all,
    Kathy

  76. Tim says:

I must say thank you to all for leaving comments here, it really is helpful. I suffered a tibia/fibula fracture in my right leg that required a long nail, a thin rod and some screws put in. I am 7 weeks out and have begun full weight bearing. I thought everything was going great until my 6 week check up. The bone isn’t healing as fast as it should and might need a bone cell graph from my hip. I REALLY hope this isn’t the case. I eat healthy, take the meds and additional vitamins. I will say that I’ve had a couple of beers almost every night since coming home from hospital. This might be the case and reason for my complications. I quitting alcohol today, ugh and coffee, ugh with hopes that it may help. I’m a 32 year old active male who has never experienced a bone break.

@ Sergio up top, I have been taking this powder called Bone Meal that you is available in organic stores and or online but not sure. Lots of Vitamin D is very crucial as you heal and stay inside.

I feel for everyone here and being stuck inside with nowhere to go can be extremely frustrating but just know there are healthy times ahead for youm but only if you take your meds and vitamins. Fast Healing friends,
    Tim

Aloha. I broke both my bones in the middle of my fore arms
About two weeks ago. And let me say I feel like it
Was a blessings, because it completely halted my
Path I was on in my life which wasn’t a very
Healthy lifestyle at all, it forced me to stop and
Gave me time to think about my life in general
And how I could improve areas that where harming
Me in my life. But my question is…
Is it ok for my recovery to be on strict juice diet
Rich with greens and veggies and fruits, and
Drink plenty of water without chomping on
    Food. Thanks

  78. melody says:

I broke my left distal fibula straight through on May 22nd. I was given a full leg cast with NWB for 7 weeks by one doctor. Here are the steps I followed:

    1) I drank 3 cups of comfrey tea everyday for 2 weeks (I know it’s supposed to be bad for your liver, but so is sugar. I am not recommending it to anyone; this is just my experience.)

    2) I took crystalline hydroxyapatite, which is what bones are made out of–one brand is Bone UP.

    3) I was on a no sugar, high protein (only chicken, fish and goat, no beef) diet for the full time.

    4) Of course no smoking or alcohol–although I did have 1 beer once a week. If you smoke, you can assume that your healing time will be doubled. your bone will also heal poorly in comparison to how it would heal if you didn’t smoke.

I went for a second opinion after 3 weeks, because I didn’t trust the first doctor. My bone had already united, and as it turned out, I should have never been put in a full leg cast. When they examined the break and straightened out my foot, I had no pain. Later, the nurse told me that most people would be in excruciating pain if they had that much pressure on the break after just 3 weeks. I really had none. I was given a small cast around the break with 20% WB. I was out of that in another 2.5 weeks. I have been walking around great for the last few weeks and even wore high heels my 8th week after the break. The doctor was super impressed, although I left out the part about the high heels. There is a bump where the break was, I hope that goes away, because it will bother me if it’s there in the future.

I broke my fifth metatacil and also have rtwo small fractures at the tip of my radius. My foot went into plaster for abou 8 days and then transferred into a boot. My arm was in a sling for about 2 weeks. I have rested and massaged both my foot and arm with arnica and a aromatherapy anti inflammatory oil. It is now 3.5 weeks since injury and I can walk gently on my foot and have been us g my arm fairly freely for about a week. The doctor recommended I do light physio while at home which I have done and I am hoping to commence my full physio next week. I fell into a depression in the first few days as I couldn’t use crutches due to both my foot and arm being out of action. Once I got a battery operated wheel chair – I was a new woman. Freedom to get about the house freely etc.

I can’t believe how quickly I am healing. A nursing friend also recommend I take a protein supplement which I take with a tub of yoghurt each morning. All of this I believe has truly helped me to recover quickly.

I wish you all the very best with your recovery. Keep your spirits high, accept help from your family and friends and spend the time appreciating the small things in life because I think for me when I am back into full life I may forget this…!

  82. Sergio says:

Thank you for this article and the rest of you for comments. Its my first (hopefully last) brake, .broke tibia and fibula lower right leg. Got 3 screws and a plate. Surgery was 3 days ago, I left hospital after 2 with an air walker. My surgeon has yet to see me or speak to me after my surgery so I’m left pretty clueless at to what to expect or what to do. I’m 30, male a pretty active..rarely drink, smoke marijuana once a week if that, haven’t since fracture and don’t plan on it.
I am a bit scared about a lot of this, specially because I have no information from my surgeon yet.

For example the air walker feels really heavy, like it pulls down on my foot which is scary because I feel like it might move screws or open fractures. I was toldi cannot put any weight on it yet so when I am on crutches I feel the weight of boot pulling down.

I don’t know how long I should keep my feet up or down during the day, I don’t know what positions I can rest in other than on my back, sleeping positions, how long is maximum I should stand up for a a time, is it healthy to go watch a movie for example and be sitting down with leg down for 2 hours straight?

I know this message is a bit all I’ve the pace but I gae no idea how to deal with this t the moment. I appreciate any help you guys can give.

Sergio, I wish I knew more of what to expect with this type of injury. Osteodiet readers, can you share what you know with Sergio? In the meantime, I will keep you in prayer for a complete recovery and for peace to take the place of fear as you learn more and grow from this experience. I, too, was scared when I felt anything pull on my fractured shoulder, afraid that it would come apart. I pray that your surgeon fills you in quickly about how to best care for yourself while you heal.

Geo, yes, you are blessed that you know the truth. If you have God, you have all you need. Something tells me that these five weeks will be a special time in your life and that God is working powerfully to heal you both physically and spiritually. I will pray for your ankle to be completely restored, so that you can walk and run and fulfill your mission.

    God bless you all,

  84. Geo says:

On June 14, I broke my left distal fibula when I slipped and fell. Thank God it was an uncomplicated fracture that, according to the orthopedist, will heal without issue as long as I follow his instructions: at least 6 weeks in a cast. One week down already, 5 more to go. No attempting to stand or walk on the ankle at all until he says I can.

I had walked away from God. Backslidden. Now I come back to him because He is the ONLY thing that can get me through this.

I return to prayer, return to the Bible. All the things I thought were important, all the stupid, silly complaints, grouses & covets that I had have become NOTHING in the light of wanting my ankle restored so I can stand and walk unaided. I hold onto Him, trusting Him for full recovery.

  85. David Sawyer says:

I also fractured my fifth metatarsal on my right foot last Friday. I waited all week end before seeing the doctor. I thought it was just a sprain but it did try to stay off it. They have me in a boot and crutches. I heard that Vitamin C, Zinc, Calcium, and high protein helps with healing. I’ve also been trying to get better sleep at night. I drank a couple days ago but I’m cutting out all alcohol until this heals. I don’t smoke but I do hang around smokers so I’m going to limit my exposure to second hand smoke. I have more x-rays next Wednesday (about 1.5 weeks after the initial accident). I notice that if I can get a very good nights sleep consistently I am a fast healer. Sadly I suffer from chronic insomnia but it’s been subsiding lately. I’m going to try to get someone to go to the store for me and buy fresh Fruit and more veggies to eat. See what happens.

  87. Cher says:

Hi, I broke my 5th metatarsal over 3 weeks ago. I am hoping to go on holiday in a week and a half, depending on healing and whether I get changed from a boot into a cast. I have accidentally put pressure on my foot 3 times, as I am not very competent on my crutches. I am worried that this will have done harm, even though it was only for a second each time.

I am getting quite depressed, tearful etc. I hate the fact that my husband has to do everything, and as he works long hours he is getting very tired, but would never complain. I really want to be well enough to go on our holiday next week as he really needs and deserves it. If we don’t get I will feel like I am to blame.

I have two dogs, and they really help to cheer me up. Everyone should get a pet. Also, I have been taking extra supplements hoping this will help. Someone also recommended Arnica tablets, though I haven’t tried these yet.

Please could you say a prayer for me.

    • Kathy says:

Cher, I will indeed pray for you. It is hard not to blame yourself when the inconveniences of an injury intrude into family life. I, too, felt guilty and depressed that I was unable to do my part–or what I considered my part–in our family while I healed. It helped me to realize that God could have saved me from the accident, but did not not. Understanding that God’s will is always for our benefit and/or for the benefit of others moved me to ask, “What am I supposed to learn from this? How is this injury going to benefit me or benefit others?” I kept my eyes open for the blessing, and indeed it came! Most of all, because my fracture healed quickly and in record time, I understood that there was nothing wrong with my body’s “bone-building” mechanism, and that what I was doing to reverse osteoporosis naturally was working! I also experienced much gratitude and admiration for my husband’s sacrifice and dedication, and he was proud of himself, I believe, for being my hero! 🙂

I will pray for you that your depression will lift and that you will find the blessing hidden in this trial. God bless you,
      Kathy

  88. Kathy says:

Probably. But if it’s only for one night, the body will do its best to overcome the setback as quickly as possible. From what I have read, James, it’s the persistent onslaught of alcohol from chronic drinking that keeps bones from healing, not an occasional drink. Just the same, why would you chance it? Why not drink something that helps to heal the bones instead, such as water with lemon? You could dress up your drink by throwing in a maraschino cherry, and no one would be the wiser. Or how about a glass of tomato juice? It might look like a Bloody Mary, but your bones will appreciate the alkaline difference. 🙂

  89. James says:

I broke my femur and have a rod in my leg. Also cracked my shoulder about 6 weeks ago.
My mates party is coming up And I was wondering would it affect my healing if a had a little to drink?

  90. Anonymous says:

I fractured my 5th metatarsal over 9 weeks ago, I did refuse a cast and was put in a boot, using one crutch and weight through my heel. I got a CT scan this week and there is not one sign of healing, I do drink and smoke and have stopped this week. I am going into a hard cast also with strict nonweightbearing, had I listened to my doctor in the first place, I would probably be starting physical therapy at this point…..love your pointers, hoping to not have to get a plate and screws!

    • Kathy says:

Mark, I can certainly understand why you would be down, missing so many exciting events that you were looking forward to. I do believe that God hides blessings in the crosses He asks us to bear, so be on the lookout to see the “something good” that God means to come your way through this injury. I have a friend who many years ago lost his leg in a motorcycle wreck. Because of that accident, he became interested in medicine and became a doctor! Who knows what you will discover about yourself and your world as the result of this break? You are young and strong and have so much to give. I will pray for your recovery and for your discovery.

May God continue to hold you in the palm of His hand,

  93. Mary says:

Kathy, this is for Aamir. I think a lot of people have found your thread because you are positive and encouraging. I am recovering from a leg fracture which has been plated and seems to be getting better rather slowly. The doctors said not to worry about what I eat or drink, but I think you are right, caffeine and alcohol are not such good ideas. To Aamir I would say that it is natural to be depressed, I feel low and my injury is much less bad. Maybe make yourself a calendar – on paper or on the computer – and write down both how you feel (‘lots of pain’ ‘rubbish’ ‘awake half night’) but also your visitors and nice things that happen, even if it is just listening to a good song on radio, or talking to a friend on the phone, to show that life is good too. Also if you write things down you will see that you ARE getting better even if it is slow. Maybe there are places you can borrow or hire mobility vehicles once you can get out – they can be fun as well as useful.

    • Kathy says:

Mary, I agree completely! As you said, noting the small improvements, while acknowledging the difficulties, helps us see that we ARE getting better, slowly but surely. Thanks for sharing!

    • Kathy says:

Hello. I’m so sorry to hear about your injury! It sounds terribly painful, and I understand how depressed you must feel, especially since you are 22 and at the prime of life. I was depressed, too, when I broke my shoulder and wondered if I would ever be back to normal. You can take courage in the knowledge that your body wants to heal, and that eventually you WILL heal. A good diet to follow would be the OsteoDiet (80% alkaline, 20% acid) to help your body to rebuild bone. Please look through the information on this website to learn more about the alkaline diet, and feel free to write if you have questions. I will keep you in my prayers for a complete recovery.

  96. Kathy says:

Steph, you may need a walking cast, such as “aa” is wearing. Better to get an x-ray to find out what is wrong, even if you have to go to the ER to get it, and then pay for it a little at a time. You are worth the money! The body needs a strong foundation for movement. I applaud you for trying to lose weight and better yourself. I hope you will do this for yourself as part of that effort.

    God bless you,
    Kathy

  97. Steph says:

Great list! I believe I have broken the sesamoid bones on my foot from a running incident, and having been trying to rest it, but it’s been nearly 3 months so far, and it’s still hurting. I never went to the doctor, because we don’t have the money (my husband gets ssi), so I’ve just been wearing a gel insole taped to the middle of my foot to keep weight off the ball of my food where the pain is at. I hope it heals soon. It’s very discouraging, especially for someone trying to lose weight and better themselves.

  98. aa says:

I had a fracture in my base of fifth metatarcel. its 3 weeks now and I am in non weight bearing cast. not allowed to put weight on the broken foot. Swelling is still there and it hurts. but thanks God I never smoke and used alcohol. And i understand why its use is discouraged in most religions. These advises are very helpful. I would definitely use the food as recommended to heal it much faster. I want to see if not smoking and alcohol all my life would pay off.

  99. Kathy says:

My goodness! What a dramatic injury! I, too, hope that your son’s fracture will be able to heal without surgery. The only I haven’t listed in the article is that my naturopathic doctor, Dr. Steven D’Antonio, had me take a liquid calcium-magnesium supplement, and the injury did heal in record time. (See http://www.vitaminlife.com/pro.....g+Ratio%29)

I will definitely keep your son in my prayers for complete and speedy recovery!

  100. donna says:

Hi, My 17 yr old son sustained a mid shaft left clavicle/collar bone fracture while snowboarding on January 3. The fracture was 1.84cm.
2cm is where they recomend putting a plate and screws in which then usually have to be removed a year or two later. We decided to let it heal without the surgery using a sling support. The ortho-surgeon said it was basically 50-50 which way to go and left it up to me. Tough decision but I thought we would go the less invasive route. Is there anything further you would recommend to aid proper healing at his age? He’s a competitive snowboarder and this is a fairly common injury and may happen more than once. I forgot to ask the doctor if the bone will be as strong as before. The bone will be shorter on one side and I hope it really won’t greatly affect his mobility or cause back pain in the future. Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks and god bless

Anmol, giving up smoking and drinking definitely will improve your body’s ability to rebuild bone tissue. You’re on the right track!

God bless you and keep you,

There is a highly rated product out from Garden of Life called “Grow Bone System.” It’s available at my local health food store, but you can also order it on Amazon.com. (Link: http://www.amazon.com/Garden-L.....roduct_top) This product contains the nutrients that I took to rebuild my bones, and if I were to break a bone today, I would immediately purchase this product. I don’t know if it will help in your situation, but it might be worth a try. I will pray for you that your femur will heal.

    God bless you,
    Kathy

I broke my femur June 2nd of last year, unfortunately the plate supporting it broke after 10 months of non-union.Had bone graft but seems the broken bone hasn’t shown any improvement. It was exactly 10 weeks today after the 2nd surgery.

Hi! Miss Kathy! I am only in 6th grade and just broke my tibia fibia and ankle playing soccer :(. Summer has just begun and I am stuck on the couch for four weeks with a thigh high 30 pound cast. Then after I get that off I get a cast below knee for 2-6 weeks. That means my summer is gone the 3rd time in a row. Yes, I have broken a leg 3 straight years. I really wanted to have a great summer but now it’s gone. I had trouble wih number 10. And I really want to have this heal the fastest that it can. Thank you!!!!!

    Hi Kathy,
Many thanks for the information – much appreciated.
Came off a ladder on the weekend straight onto my back from about 2.5m height, and fractured (compression) my L1 vertebra.
Fortuntaly spinal cord not impacted, and now focussing on healing of bone.

Diet will now take into account your advice – thank you as I can now understand how much real effect it will have on recovery.
