Today was my last visit with Dr. White because…my shoulder fracture is healed and mobility is nearing 100%!

Dr. White did have some words of advice as he sent me on my way.  Continued stretching, he said, is essential over the next year.  He suggested finding a door in my house that is strongly hinged and stable, moving a step stool up to the door, and then grabbing the top of the door with  my left hand and hanging down from it, using the step stool for leverage.  If I pick a doorway that I walk through several times a day, I should spend 30 seconds hanging on it every time I walk through.  Dr. White said that this stretching exercise will help me recover the last few degrees of mobility in shoulder that so far have eluded me.

With those words, he set me free!  The rest of my treatment program is up to me.

I fractured my humerus neck 3.5 weeks ago when I went bk for X-rays after 3 weeks the crack had spread to more then double the original size it’s 4.8 mm. I’m very worried it may not fuse. I’m thinking the fracture is worse because the sports med dr had me start physical therapy a week after fracture and by 2nd week they were havering me move my arm and lift weights if course they arnt taking blame for it. Has anyone had this happen where the fractute spread and at 3 weeks it’s not showing fusing. My shoulder blade area hurts bad and bicep hurts bad also. Did anyone have permanent rotator cuff prob. Thanks so much for any info

  3. Julie says:

I broke my shoulder 7 weeks ago and have only had 1 physiotherapy session with the next on 7th February. The NHS can be slow! I’m a teacher and cannot return to work until I’ve been seen by the occupational health therapist. I’m exercising and gradually going more having achieved 45% range of movement but because I also have rheumatoid arthritis I have been warned that I will probably never regain full range. The worst of my pain is at night and I wake 3 or 4 times every night usually giving up on sleep around 4 am – does anyone else experience strong pain so LNG after the break? How do you cope with sleeping?

  4. Kathy says:

Kathy, I am reading your blog today for the information I skipped the last reading. The ER doctor had said my “bones were cornflakes” so I thought I was being released to non-surgical healing, on my own. Friends and family encouraged me to see a shoulder specialist for a second opinion. A week ago, I saw him and four days later he squeezed me in for surgery, nearly two weeks after my fall. He installed a plate which he will not remove and the rotator cuff is holding the shoulder together sort of like an internal cast. That is held with sinew which will dissolve. My personal battles revolve around the balance of too little vs. too much pain meds. Last night I had the pain block drip removed and I struggled.Today, three days after the surgery, I am just now beginning to get it right, to stay ahead of the pain, and to eat, finally. Thanks to all your readers’ suggestions. Jinx

How old are you? How old when you were first diagnosed?

    • Kathy says:

Do you mean when I was diagnosed with osteoporosis or with the factured shoulder? I was 51 when I was diagnosed with osteoporosis. I broke my shoulder in a bike accident when I was 54.

      • Sylvia says:

Have you fully recovered. I fractured my hemerus neck 4 weeks ago. I’m 52 and very stressed fracture hasn’t shown signs of mending and
Dealing with a lot of pain. Hoping I haven’t
Damaged rotator cuff I haven’t read where anyone has mentioned that

    • Deborah says:

I fell and fractured by proximity humorous in to four pieces Feb 4. The bone has not healed yet. I also fractured my little finger. I have only been released for occupational and therapy. Now in an abductor brace due to bone slippage. Been I. This brace 3 weeks now. Still have pain at night and after hand exercises. I am 57. Doctor says surgery is risky and probably would not result in better ROM.
