“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me – watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” (Matt.11:28-30)

I used to think that God would love me more if I worked harder for him. I concentrated on scriptures about the servant who wisely invested his talents, and another verse where God said, “Well done, good and faithful servant,” and another where Jesus said we are to be servants to one another. When I came across this scripture passage a few months ago, a light went on in my head! God never asked us to kill ourselves with work. In fact, He asked us to come to Him for rest! I have read this passage over and over this summer, learning God’s “unforced rhythms of grace.” I am grateful and amazed at how much joy is to be found in “living freely and lightly” in the company of Jesus Christ!
