food-guideWhile these are my “Top 10” books for bone-healthy eating, the “Top 3” are my absolute favorites!

1)  The pH Miracle for Weight Loss by Robert O. Young, PhD and Shelly Redford Young.   Lots of “before and after” photos of pH Miracle success story, along with more than 100 pages of of delicious menus and recipes.

2) The Acid Alkaline Food Guide by Dr. Susan E. Brown and Larry Trivieri, Jr.  This food guide is my “bible” for acid and alkaline foods.  I use this book more than any other to help determine the acid-alkaline balance of my food intake.

3) The Acid Alkaline Balance Diet by Felicia Drury Kliment.  Reading this book will show you how the alkaline diet benefits all body systems, not just the bones.

4) Back to the House of Health 2 by Shelley Redford Young, L.M.T.  Chock full of alkalizing recipes, this book contains some recipes that I consider a bit “exotic”.  But, hey!  It’s fun to create unusual dishes for a change of pace!

5)  Food and Our Bones by Annemarie Colbin.  More great recipes!  (Be sure to read the section “What About Milk Products?” on p. 53-55.)

6) Sleep Away the Pounds by Cherie Calbom, MS, with John Calbom, MA.  This book explains the connection between what we eat and the quality of sleep we experience, and then goes on to say how our quality of sleep affects the health of the body.  (Be sure to check out the section “Growth Hormone, Fat Burning, and Muscle Development” on p. 24-25.)

7) Extra-Special Crockery Pot Recipes by Lou Seibert Pappas.  Most of these recipes tend toward the alkaline side, but not all.  I bypass the recipes that feature dairy products and large amounts of sugar.  For small amounts of sugar, I substitute Xylitol in equal measure.

8) Come Cook With Me! by Carolyn Coats and Pamela Smith R.D.  This delightful cookbook for kids feature healthy, easy-to-prepare recipes, and most of them are alkaline!   Again, I substitute Xylitol for sugar, use Ezekiel bread for all bread, and skip the highly acidifying snacks, such as popcorn.

9) The Maker’s Diet by Jordan S. Rubin.  The author of this book is a naturopathic doctor whose faith-based journey from near death to optimum health is an inspiration…and an example.

10) The Calorie Counter by Annette B. Natow, PhD, R.D. and Jo-Ann Heslin, M.A., R.D.  It is said that you can’t overeat on 80% alkaline/20% acid diet.  Just the same, I check out the calories in certain items once in a while.  For example,  1 ounce of almonds is 170 calories.  Almonds are alkaline, which is good, but too much of a good thing might add some extra pounds that I don’t want.  So, I stick to eating about 12-16 almonds at a time.

10 Comments on Top 10 Books for Investigating Healthy Eating to Build Bone Strength

  1. Great book choices! I also loved the Primal Diet book as I have found good raw milk and dairy products ( easy to get in California) one of the very BEST things for osteoporosis.

The body handles raw dairy MUCH differently and it’s a great source for Vt K, lactoferrin and more.

Jordan S. Rubin, Mercola, Kevin Trudeau and many others rave about the benefits too.

This is the first I’ve heard about prunes helping to build stronger bones. Frankly, I’m a little surprised since prunes are listed as “mildly acidic” in Dr. Brown’s food guide, but I’ll definitely investigate the resources you mentioned.

    Thanks for the heads up!

One more comment, then I promise I’ll quit for the day 🙂 On foods, have you read recently about prunes for stronger bones? I think the count was 9 a day. I believe I read about it on Dr. Susan Brown’s e-mail. Then it was also mentioned in the Dr. Weil forum I referenced in my other post. Lots of interesting studies being done!

Thanks again for all the info you provide!

    Gail
