When I’m out walking or running as my weight bearing exercise here in Central Florida, I’m sometimes bothered by hungry mosquitoes. So, what’s a devoted bone builder to do?
Here’s a handy trick. You can keep mosquitoes from attacking by mixing in a spray bottle:
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup water
Spritz the mixture on your pulse points, and no more mosquito bites! The aroma of vanilla blocks mosquitoes’ antennae receptors, keeping them from detecting your scent.

Reader Question: I have recently started an alkaline diet, and I hope it will help heal my osteoporosis. The problem I’m having is when I check the pH level of my urine–which I’m doing regularly–it is perfect, but when I check my saliva, it is always acidic no matter what time of day I check it. I don’t check it immediately after eating, so it doesn’t pick up on what I have just eaten. I’m wondering what is wrong. Have you heard of this happening?
Answer: I had to do some research to find an answer to this question! My doctor told me that the mouth tends to be a more acidic environment, but I wondered why that would be. Then I came across this article online, “Measuring your own pH,” at http://www.ajpip.com/resources/measure_ph.htm. The article says saliva can be affected by bacteria in the mouth and goes on to give a thorough explanation of other factors that can affect the test results. I hope you find the article as interesting as I did! 🙂

Jesus said that we are to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. But how do we do that? How do we “love” God?
First of all, we obey God. Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commandments.” That’s the start. The more we obey God, the more we come to trust Him and love Him.
Eventually, if we stay in God’s company faithfully–learning more about Him and doing our best to follow His will in our lives–we’ll end up falling in love with Him.
These are the top 10 books that helped me fall in love with God:
1) Abba’s Child by Brennan Manning
2) Searching for God Knows What by Donald Miller
3) The Love Languages of God by Gary Chapman
4) Illuminata: A Return to Prayer by Marianne Williamson
5) The Art of Trust by Lee Jampolsky, Ph.D.
6) Finding Peace by Charles Stanley
7) The Joyful Christian by C. S. Lewis
8) Smile For No Good Reason by Lee L. Jampolsky, Ph.D.
9) In Step With God by Charles F. Stanley
10) Pathway to Purpose for Women by Katie Brazelton
Enjoy!

Reader question: I’ve been strictly following an alkaline diet and have lost too much weight! How can I can gain weight on an alkaline diet?
Answer: Perhaps you might need to follow the advice that my doctor gave me when my weight started dipping too low. He told me to eat more fat! He told me that healthy fats were essential to good health–for skin, hormone production, and much more.
To that end, I began including avocado, walnuts, and roasted sunflower seeds in my salads. I also started eating healthy desserts, such as Healthy Carrot Cake. Since my aim is an 80% alkaline, 20% acid diet–not a 100% alkaline diet–I include some meat in my diet, too, as well as Deboles brand Jerusalem Artichoke fettuccine and spaghetti.
Including more healthy fat has made me feel better, with more energy and calmness. My weight hovers around 118-120 these days, which seems to be a healthy weight for me.
Breakfast: Fruity Protein Shake, water
Snack: Raspberry tea with Beyond C powder, supplements
Lunch: Cocoa Cherry Standard Bar, Apple, water
Snack: Cup of cherry tomatoes, 12 almonds, 2 tbsp. sunflower seeds, water
Supper: Turkey Loaf, Almond Mashed Potatoes, Tossed Salad, Carrot Cake, water, supplements
Bedtime: Water (still full from supper…)
