The Wednesday Walkers trekked a total of 100.9 miles during the 2008-2009 school year!
Who are the Wednesday Walkers? We are a group of teachers, administrators, and clerical staff members from Southwestern Middle School in DeLand, Florida, who care about fitness. Every Wednesday afternoon we don our walking shoes after school and speed walk through the streets of our neighborhood, waving to folks who know us as we pass by. It’s good PR for our school, and it’s great for our health and bone strength!
We’ve been posting our mileage on OsteoDiet’s Walk Around the World tracking chart. Just click on “WATW” logo at the top to check us out.
If you work in a school, why not join us on Wednesday afternoons this coming year? You’ll be glad you did! For details on how to participate, write me a “comment” below. Read the rest of this entry »

Now that summer is here and school is out for a couple of months, I have some definite goals for OsteoDiet.
First, a ton of information will be coming your way about nutrition and its effects on our bones. I recently accompanied Dr. Bourne to a convention at Standard Process, maker of the whole food supplements I now take. What I learned there about bone health and nutrition may surprise you.
Second, several readers’ questions have come in that are of general interest. I’ll be addressing those inquiries day-by-day. If you have questions or comments, please feel free to leave a comment below or to write me at kathleen_alford@yahoo.com.
Third, I’m in the process of creating and publishing our first OsteoDiet cookbook! If you have favorite recipes you’d like included in Volume 1, be sure to let me know.
Fourth, it’s time for a one-year progress report on my shoulder fractures that healed in record time. Coming soon!
Fifth, I’m enjoying a bouquet of exercise activities this summer! You can, too! I’ll tell you all about it.
Finally, well…the rest is a surprise. Stay tuned!

I have found a new mantra that helps me maintain my resolve to eat only healthful, bone-building foods:
“No one puts food in my mouth, but me.”
At work when the faculty and staff lay out a covered dish luncheon, complete with fried foods and sugar-laden dishes, I repeat:
“No one puts food in my mouth, but me.”
When I haven’t packed a snack, and vending machines are staring me in the face, I recall:
“No one puts food in my mouth, but me.”
When I’m having company, and I’m tempted to cook the way I used to, rather than the way I do now, I remind myself:
“No one puts food in my mouth, but me.”
It’s true. No one force feeds me. Temptation is not the same as choice. I am the one who decides what goes in my mouth. I have the control. I don’t have to conquer anyone else, just myself. I am only dealing with one person, not a crowd, and I am willing to do what it takes to be healthy and strong.
“No one puts food in my mouth, but me!” That’s worth celebrating!
