black beansHere’s a hearty stew that quick and easy to make!

Ingredients:
2 cans of black beans, either plain or seasoned
1 can stewed tomatoes
1 pkg of turkey sausage, halved lengthwise and cut into 1/2-inch slices
2 medium carrots, thinly sliced

In a large saucepan, stir together all ingredients.  Bring to a boil.  Reduce heat and simmer, covered, for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, and it’s ready!

My husband and I ate half of this recipe, and then I froze the other half for a second dinner later.  The second time I added some steamed collard greens to the mix.  Yummy!

yogurtI mainly used Dr. Susan Brown’s book, The Acid Akaline Food Guide, but I also referred to Vivian Goldschmidt’s book, The Bone Health Revolution. They agree about the akalyzing properties of most foods, but disagree on whether soured milk products, such as yogurt and sour cream, are alkalyzing or acidifying. I’ve written to both women on the websites to try to find out the reason for the discrepancy, but neither has replied. Perhaps it depends on individual body chemistry. As for me, I now include yogurt and a small amount of sour cream in my diet, but not other dairy products, and these additions have had no detrimental effects on my body’s pH level. The proof is in the pH testing of my saliva and urine,
using ph testing tape. As long as my body’s pH level hovers at the 7.3-7.4 range, I’m happy.

Ryan and Hala's weddingToday my son, Ryan, who developed and manages my website,  married his lovely bride, Hala!  Both Ryan and Hala value healthy eating and exercise,  as both are talented weightlifters who have won the  State Championship.  They met in high school as members of arch-rival weightlifting teams, the DeLand Bulldogs and the Spruce Creek Hawks.  Today, however, DeLand met Spruce Creek for a match made in heaven. Congratulations, Ryan and Hala!  May God’s choicest blessings be yours.                       Love, Mom

sunshineAfter a long winter, what a delight to be enjoying the sunshine and warmer temperatures!

Sunday I weeded the garden patch and planted the first of our crops, tomatoes and sqaush, with more soon to follow.  The Wednesday Walkers, our walking group of teachers, administrators, and staff at school, will go on our first trek of the season around the school neighborhood on Wednesday.  Now that achievement testing is over, I have had time to return to my belly dancing classes at Suehair’s Bellydance Etc. two weeks ago, and I can already feel a difference in my overall tone and fitness.  (Belly dancing is great exercise for building bone density!)  I’m looking forward to more time at the YMCA gym for weight bearing workouts, too!

I have a new and rather exotic recipe to share you  involving mustard greens, which taste great when cooked with Chinese spices.  If I get it cooked tonight and take a photo of it, I’ll post it to OsteoDiet.com tomorrow.  In the meantime, may the joys of springtime be yours!
