“Outstanding progress,” wrote Jeremy Zell, my physical therapist at Ability Rehabiliation.  After 4 weeks in physical therapy, I have recovered most of the range of motion that I had before I fractured my shoulder last June.  Jeremy has increased my muscle strengthening exercises.  Every day I am able to do something that I couldn’t do the day before.

The trick is to do the homework as assigned, and it takes the better part of an hour to do all the stretches and exercises that Jeremy has recommended.  As a middle school teacher, I know the drill:  Do your homework to build skill and competence.  Here the drill is:  Do your homework to build strength and freedom of motion.  Jeremy’s report to Dr. White recommends four more weeks of physical therapy to get the job done.  Tomorrow I visit Dr. White for a checkup.  I’ll let you know what he says.

Recently I have been reading about the strontium-calcium debate. Although research is inconclusive, some studies indicate that strontium and calcium may compete with each other for absorption. Personally, I find this puzzling, since both are needed to build strong bone. The fact that I take liquid strontium, calcium-magnesium, and cell-ready minerals together in my “Bone Cocktail” each night definitely peaked my interest. To get their take on the matter, I contacted Eniva Corporation, the company from which I purchase these liquid supplements. Here’s what Diane Rosby of Eniva Corp. wrote me this past week:

“In some cases the presence of calcium could possibly lower the absorption of strontium, as can food, although most studies have been inconclusive. To maximize the absorption of strontium they may wish to take strontium by itself with an hour separating the taking of strontium from food or other supplements.

But remember Kathy, we are never to tell people what to do….they should rely on their doctors for that information.”

Hmmm…I wonder…Does this mean I need to abandon my Bone Cocktail? Dr. Rogers said nothing to this effect, and I would have to hear it from him before I’d make the change. That’s my next step. I’ll let you know.

What a wet week we’ve had here in Delightful DeLand!  Tropical Storm Fay went above and beyond the call of duty in relieving our dangerously dry conditions in the area.  School was canceled from Tuesday through Friday because of wind gusts and constant rain.  This is the first truly sunny day we’ve had since last Monday!

Now, you would think that being marooned indoors would have given me lots of free time to write for OsteoDiet, but no.  Instead of writing, I spent lots of fun time with my husband, our children, their significant others, and our grandchildren.  We played board games, watched movies, ate lots of food, and just generally played.  I don’t do enough of that generally–play, I mean.  It was a welcome break from my deeply ingrained work ethic.

But now that the sun is out and I’ve been out running, I’m ready to settle down to the desktop again.  I have some exciting research to share, a new recipe, progress reports, and more.   It’s going to be an exciting week on OsteoDiet.com!  Stay tuned!

I recommend one of our home-town favorites, Main Street Grill, as the place to eat when you want to enjoy mouth-watering food while building bone density!

My personal favorites from the menu are:

1) Main Street Salad with either blackened chicken or salmon, with balsamic vinegarette dressing;

2) Chicken Almond Stir Fry, which features sliced chicken, slivered almonds, and lots of vegetables in a flavorful terakayi sauce that I simply cannot duplicate at home. The dish comes with rice, but I usually ask for a baked potato in place of the rice.

Main Street Grill is located on Woodland Boulevard, near the corner of Woodland and New York Avenue in downtown DeLand. For more information, you can visit their website at: http://www.mainstreetgrilldeland.com. If you sign up to join their e-mail club, the folks at Main Street Grill will send you gift certificates on your birthday and anniversary, and on special holidays, too!

I found this article on-line today for delicious, easy-to-make protein shakes. I’m going to try the Berry-Vanilla Shake this morning, substituting almond milk for the regular milk for added bone health, and frozen strawberries and water in place of berries and ice.
