Today’s is my sister’s birthday, and we’re having an extended family birthday party for her! Here the daily diet for today, including the fixin’s for Teresa’s celebration.

Breakfast: Fruity Protein Shake, Greens Shake, Strawberry Tea with Beyond C powder, supplements, water

Snack: Bone Cocktail

Lunch: BIRTHDAY PARTY! DeBoles Jerusalem Artichoke Spaghetti with Free-Range Turkey Meatballs, Tossed Salad, Grandma’s Pineapple Fruit Salad, millet rolls from DeLand Bakery and Natural Market, Sarah’s Pumpkin Pie with Soy Whip, water, strawberry tea with Beyond C powder

Supper: Vegetable Beef Soup, Tossed Salad, millet roll, water

Bedtime: Bone Cocktail with Beyond C Powder, supplements, water

Here’s an easy crockpot recipe for a hearty, bone healthy vegetable beef soup!

Combine in the crockpot:
1 pound lean stew beef, sliced into small chunks
1 can of stewed tomatoes
4 cups water
6 beef bouillon cubes
4 carrots, thinly sliced
4 stalk of celery, thinly sliced
4 potatoes, peeled and cut into small chunks
1 cup of fresh green beans
1 large onion, chopped
1 small bag of organic frozen peas
1 bay leaf
Salt & pepper to taste

Cook in the crock pot on low for about 3 hours.  Serve with toasted Ezekiel bread.

This fruit salad recipe has been a family favorite for four generations. I’ve made a couple of changes to the pineapple topping to make it more healthful and bone friendly, but I know Grandma wouldn’t mind!

Combine in a serving bowl:

1 can of pineapple chunks, drained (Reserve the juice if you want to make the pineapple sauce topping.)
1 can of mandarin oranges, drained
1 apple, sliced into small chunks
1 cup of fresh cherries, sliced in half and pitted
1 cup of green or red grapes, sliced in half
1 banana, sliced

To make a delicious pineapple sauce topping, melt 1/4 cup of Earth Balance buttery spread in a saucepan. Add 1/4 cup of oat flour and stir into a paste. At medium heat, add the reserved pineapple juice gradually, stirring over medium heat until the mixture is smooth and thickened. Drizzle into the mixture one 1 well beaten egg, stirring fast with a spoon or a whisk. Stir in 1/2 tsp of Xylosweet. Refrigerate. Top individual servings with pineapple sauce, if desired. This delicious dish can be served as a salad or as a dessert!

Here’s an improvement on the traditional pumpkin pie recipe, created by my daughter, Sarah. She replaced half the evaporated milk with unsweetened almond milk, and she substituted Xylosweet for regular sugar. We all think it tastes better than any pumpkin pie we’ve ever tasted before–and it’s more bone friendly, too!

Combine the following ingredients, mixing well after each addition:

2 eggs
1 can Libby’s pumpkin
1/2 cup Xylosweet
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ginger
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. ground cloves
3/4 cup evaporated milk (1/2 of a 12-oz. can)
3/4 cup almond milk, unsweetened vanilla flavor

Pour into a 9″ pie crust. Bake at 425 degrees for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees and bake for an additional 45 minutes. Pie is done when knife inserted in center comes out clean. Serve with Soy Whip for an extra treat!

If you watch this video that I found earlier today on Yahoo, you’ll hear that some doctors are saying that pharmaceutical osteoporosis drugs are being overprescribed and that they may not do much to prevent fractures in those who take the drugs. That’s just the tip of the iceberg, my friends!

Take a look on website for Fosamax and Fosamax Plus D, and click on “Possible Side Effects”. Here’s part of what you’ll find: “Stop taking FOSAMAX and call your doctor right away if you develop new or worsening heartburn, difficult or painful swallowing, or chest pain because these may be signs of serious upper digestive problems, which can include irritation, inflammation, or ulceration of the esophagus…If you develop severe bone, joint, and/or muscle pain at any time, contact your doctor.”

And there’s more! Check out the website Fosamax Side Effects and you might be shocked to find that taking Fosamax or other bisphosphonates may actually cause your jawbone to decay, rot, and die! I quote: “In 2003, the Journal of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery published a letter which found that dozens of patients taking bisphosphonates had developed the symptoms of jaw necrosis. Subsequent research has uncovered thousands of osteonecrosis cases among bisphosphonate users, including those who used Fosamax.” The article goes on to say that the Food and Drug Administration in 2004 directed Merck & Co., the manufacturer of Fosamax, to issue a warning about this risk. The warnings were sent to the doctors, not to the patients. Fosamax lawsuits against Merck have been filed, claiming that the company failed to adequately warn consumers about the possible side effects of taking the bisphosphonate drug. Although cancer patients and patients undergoing dental procedures are most at risk, anyone taking Fosamax has an increased risk of developing jaw necrosis.

People ask me from time to time, “What exactly do you DO at the YMCA?”

One of the best ways to build bone density is weight bearing exercise, so most of what I do at the Y is work out on the Nautilus machines. However, I also walk and run on the treadmill and put in time on the Precor, which is kind of like bicycling standing up. A new addition to my routine is doing squats with free weights, which is an ideal exercise for building bone density in the hip.

Here’s my routine at current levels:

First, I warm up for 10 minutes on either the treadmill or the PreCor to get my body ready for strenuous activity. Then I head to the Nautilus machines.

1) Leg Curl: 70 pounds / 20 repetitions
2) Leg Extension: 70 pounds / 20 reps
3) Inner Abductor: 70 pounds / 24 reps
4) Outer Abductor: 70 pounds / 24 reps
5) Leg Press: 160 pounds / 24 reps
6) Pullover: 30 pounds / 8 reps
7) Arm Cross: 30 pounds / 14 reps
8) Chest Press: 40 pounds / 24 reps
9) Overhead Press: 40 pounds / 21 reps
10) Row: 80 pounds / 24 reps
11) Biceps: 40 pounds / 7 reps
12) Seated Dip: 120 pounds / 20 reps
13) Torso Flex: 25 pounds / 26 reps
14) Torso Arm: 120 pounds / 21 reps
15) Lateral Raise: 20 pounds / 12 reps
16) Abdominal: 40 pounds / 20 reps

Using Free Weights
Squats: 20 pounds / 11 reps

After working out, I cool down for 10 minutes on the treadmill and do some stretching. I learned that it’s important to do these cool down activities because it keeps lactic acid and other wastes from pooling in the muscles and causing muscle soreness. Finally, I drink a bottle of water and eat a piece of fruit to rehydrate and refuel!

I visited Dr. Rogers Monday evening to go over the results of the hormone panel (blood test) I took last month.  I didn’t understand every detail of the report, but he explained the most significant figures.  He said both my estrogen and progesterone levels are low, but my DHEA is high.  He went on to explain that DHEA is the precursor to several hormones in the body, including estrogen, progesterone, adrenaline, and more.  He surmised that since my DHEA level is high, while my estrogen and progesterone levels are low, that the DHEA may be being used primarily to make adrenaline. What does this mean for me?  I’m not sure yet.  Dr. Rogers is planning to consult with his pharmacist to determine which hormone combination would be right for me to take to help the body balance out its hormone levels.  (Dr. Rogers had told me previously that balanced hormones help the body to maintain proper bone density.)

Dr. Rogers also did kinetic testing to make sure the lower dose (1 grain) of thyroid hormone is effective, and it is.  Furthermore, I am to make an appointment in two weeks to see if I can stop taking thyroid altogether!  Dr. Rogers said that the MedCaps T3 (from Xymogen) apparently has done its job in helping my thyroid to heal and produce its own thyroid hormone!
